Trainee Instructor Course

Advance your Wing Chun skills and knowledge and gain access to unique career opportunities through the Academy's Trainee Instructor Course!

The Trainee Instructor Course is open to all students of the Academy who have achieved Advanced Grade 2 standard or above.

Trainee Instructors, also known as Sihing (male) or Sijie (female), are denoted by a red sash worn around the waist.

Course Overview

The Trainee Instructor Course was originally developed by the Academy's founder, Grandmaster Jim Fung, and has been kept up to date with the latest industry knowledge by the Academy's experienced trainers and instructors.

The Trainee Instructor Course equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to become Trainee Instructors of the International Wing Chun Academy. Through an intensive 9-week course, students learn about topics such as:

  • The history and development of Wing Chun and the Academy
  • Legal issues pertaining to martial arts instruction
  • Ethical behaviour of martial arts instructors
  • Leadership and communication skills
  • Injury prevention in martial arts
  • Conducting safe and effective exercise
  • Grandmaster Jim Fung's unique training programme and teaching methods

Upon graduation, Trainee Instructor Course graduates will have acquired excellent skills in Wing Chun theory and practical instruction.

The Trainee Instructor Course is completed while students continue to attend regular Wing Chun classes (charged separately) and progress through the Grading System of Grandmaster Jim Fung's Wing Chun Kung Fu®.

 

Benefits of Becoming an Instructor

Once a student has completed the Trainee Instructor Course, they are encouraged to progress to Level 1 standard as efficiently as possible. Once the student has attained Level 1 standard, their teaching skills will be re-assessed and they may be promoted to the rank of 'Instructor' (denoted by a blue sash worn around the waist).

Course Duration

The Trainee Instructor Course is taught over a 9-week period, which includes 2 weeks of exams.

Classes are held once a week, typically in the evening, and last for 2 hours each.

 

Assessments

Students of the Trainee Instructor Course are required to undergo a number of theoretical and practical assessments to ensure that they meet the high standards required of Instructors at the Academy.

The Trainee Instructor Course incorporates the following assessments:

  • Periodic quizzes conducted over the duration of the course
  • Theory Exam (2 hours) conducted in Week 7
  • Practical Exam (2 hours) conducted in Week 8

Each of the above assessments contributes to the student's total course mark.

 

Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate from the Trainee Instructor Course, a student must have:

  • Attended at least 80% of classes
  • Achieved a minimum total course mark of 60%
  • Completed an Apply First Aid course with, or possess a current First Aid certificate issued by, a registered provider
  • Completed a 'Working with Children' check

Graduation is held in Week 9 of the course.

Following graduation, the student must complete a 12-week 'Practical Experience Period' which involves teaching one Wing Chun class per week under the mentorship of a qualified Instructor.
