Apply for Grading

Are you ready to take your training to the next Grade or Level of Grandmaster Jim Fung's Wing Chun Kung Fu®? If so, it may be time for you to attempt a Grading. This page explains how to prepare for and book your Grading and outlines what happens on the day.

Grading Programme

All Gradings involve a practical assessment of the Wing Chun movements and self defence skills which you have learned up to and throughout your current Grade.

You will be required to demonstrate your self defence ability in front of a panel of Marking Instructors. Gradings for G1 to 2, G2 to 3 and G3 to 4 may involve the striking of pads or controlled, non-contact self defence scenarios which involve demonstrating a particular technique against a specific attack. Gradings for G4 to Pre-L1 and Pre-L1 to L1 involve controlled free sparring against a Marking Instructor, and Pre-L1 to L1 also involves a closed-book examination on the theory of Wing Chun and self defence.

In order to uphold the integrity and standard of the Grading System of Grandmaster Jim Fung's Wing Chun Kung Fu®, all students will be marked objectively against the standard expected of students of their current Grade. To pass a Grading, a student must attain a mark of at least 60%.

To assist students in preparing for Grading, the Academy has specified a minimum number of classes and weeks that a student must spend revising for their Grading. These revision lessons are marked on an Application for Grading Form which must be submitted when booking a Grading. While a conscientious student may be able to pass a Grading with a bare minimum amount of revision, the Academy advises that students only attempt a Grading when they are confident with their abilities and have consulted an Instructor.

All students are expected to be able to perform the Siu Nim Tau form alone without guidance.

Applying for Grading

To apply to attempt a Grading, please complete the following steps:

  1. Check the Events page to identify when the next appropriate Grading will be.
  2. Check that you have completed the minimum number of classes and weeks for your current Grade. This information is displayed on the training programme for Grandmaster Jim Fung's Wing Chun Kung Fu®. Alternatively, you may check with your Instructor or State Headquarters.
  3. Request an Application for Grading Form from your State Headquarters or Branch Leader. This form may also be downloaded at the bottom of the page.
  4. On the Application for Grading Form, check the 'Minimum Revision Requirement' for the Grading that you intend to attempt. This will involve a minimum number of revision lessons in your current Grade and any prior Grade(s), as well as a minimum number of weeks over which you must attend revision lessons. You may complete a revision lesson by attending any General Class at your Headquarters or Branch.
  5. After each revision lesson, fill in the date, time and Grade of your revision lesson and ask your Instructor to sign the entry.
  6. Once you have accumulated enough revision lessons, contact your State Headquarters or Branch Leader. You will be required to pay your full Grading Fee in advance and sign the bottom of the Application for Grading Form.

Attending Your Grading

  • Make sure you are wearing full uniform (Academy t-shirt and plain black plants or kung fu pants). You must either wear socks, cotton-soled kung fu slippers or approved martial arts shoes. Bare feet, sneakers or running shoes are not permitted.
  • If you are in Grade 2 or above, ensure that you bring your Grading Certificate to have it stamped and signed if you pass your Grading.
  • Turn up well in advance of your Grading time. This will give you time to relax and mentally prepare for your Grading. If you arrive late, you will not be allowed to Grade and you will forfeit your Grading Fee.
  • You will be assigned a random number by the panel of Marking Instructors. Your number will be called when it is your turn to demonstrate.
  • You must stand in your stance with your fists pulled back and remain silent at all times when you are not demonstrating.
  • All Gradings conclude with a warm-down or Power Training session. You are required to remain for the entirety of the Grading.
  • Upon conclusion of the Grading, all Grading attendees who have passed will be presented with their Grading Badge and results. Their Grading Certificate may be picked up from Headquarters as soon as it has been stamped and signed (allow a few days).
