Chris Harvey
Inst. Chris Harvey has been training in Wing Chun Kung Fu since joining the Canberra branch of the International Wing Chun Academy in 1980. He has since been exposed to many martial arts and interpretations of Wing Chun. After teaching privately for many years, he established his affiliate, Chris Harvey Wing Chun Kung Fu, in 2003.
Inst. Chris says that Wing Chun and how it is applied to various arts, disciplines and situations, and why it is different to many other arts, needs to be understood. This understanding begins with the style’s creator, Ng Mui. He says that a female, Master Ng Mui could not match men in physical strength and needed to consider the principle of saving strength when designing her art. She surmised that this art must involve a good strength-saving structure and use natural power from the rotation, advance and retreat of the body weight. By combining the two to exert powerful striking and defending force, a breakout attacking force could be produced. This was the reasoning behind the practical development of the three hand forms of Wing Chun Kung Fu.
