Albert Chong
Chief Instructor Albert Chong is the Academy’s longest enrolled member, having commenced his training at the Adelaide branch of the International Wing Chun Academy in 1972.
An environmental health officer by profession, he first looked into Karate, Tae Kwon Do and other Chinese martial arts, before witnessing a demonstration of Wing Chun Kung Fu by Grandmaster Fung. "He counter-punched an eye jab delivered by a friend of mine," says Inst. Albert. "I could see this was the most effective way to deal with such an attack and I reckoned that if I could learn to punch like Sifu Jim, I would be happy."
Inst. Albert was one of the Academy’s original instructors who contributed to Grandmaster Fung’s unique training programme which went through many changes before reaching its present form.
Through Grandmaster Fung, he met Sigung Chu in 1986 and has since trained at Sigung’s Hong Kong school. He says the experience endorsed his teaching from Grandmaster Fung and sharpened his skills and understanding of Wing Chun.
"I love Wing Chun not only for its simplicity and combative effectiveness, but also the scope it provides for both physical and mental development," Inst. Albert says.
"Sifu Jim Fung was a great teacher, well respected for his skill and knowledge in Wing Chun internationally, and his passing was a big blow for me. None of us (yet) have his skills and understanding of the Wing Chun system, but together, especially all the Academy’s senior instructors, we can carry on his love, ideas and dreams."
