Self Defence Classes

Why You Need to Learn Self Defence

Since January 2020, the rate of violent offences in NSW has increased by over 20%,1 along with similar increases in domestic violence-related assault and murder. With NSW currently facing a 'dire police shortage',2 there has never been a more urgent time to learn to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Learning effective self-defence doesn't take a lifetime of training. In just a few months of self-defence classes with us, you'll learn the practical skills to defend yourself against the most common types of attack. You'll also develop the situational awareness to recognise potential threats, and the assertiveness to deter them before they escalate. In a dangerous situation, these skills could make the difference between serious harm and getting away safely.

Our Unique Approach to Self Defence

Grandmaster Jim Fung teaches students at the International Wing Chun Academy.

Since 1973, we've taught thousands of people around Australia how to defend themselves using the powerful skills of Grandmaster Jim Fung's Wing Chun Kung Fu®.

Our unique Wing Chun Kung Fu system provides a structured, easy-to-follow approach to learning self-defence. From the first lesson, you'll learn how to punch, kick, and defend yourself against some of the most common street attacks, such as a strike to the head or an attempted restraint. Through scenario-based training and pad work, you'll learn to use principles of relaxation, physics and biomechanics to generate more speed and power than you ever thought possible.

A Practical and Adaptable System

Students sparring at the International Wing Chun Academy.

As Wing Chun is a concept-based system, its self-defence applications are not limited by the variety of its techniques. As you progress through our system, you'll learn to adapt Wing Chun's Core Concepts, such as 'Centreline Theory' and 'Simultaneous Attack and Defence', to any situation—against multiple attackers, weapons, and even on the ground.

Unlike most Wing Chun schools, we don't shy away from sparring. As your skills and confidence build, we'll gradually and safely introduce controlled sparring to your training, culminating in optional free sparring at the more advanced stages. Sparring will develop your ability to remain calm and focused under pressure, which is vital to being able to defend yourself in a dangerous situation.

Self Defence Classes for Women

Vlasta demonstrates a counter arm grab and palm strike against an attacker in a street self-defence scenario.

The most common types of violence that women experience in Australia are domestic and sexual violence. These types of violence typically occur behind closed doors, away from witnesses and those who might be able to help or intervene. We believe that all women should learn how to identify potential threats and develop the appropriate skills to protect themselves in dangerous situations.

We've built our Women's Self Defence Classes around the specific dangers that women face in their daily lives. From your first lesson, you'll learn how to assert yourself using confident body language while strategically positioning your body to attack and defend with maximum force. We'll teach you the principles of skill over strength and how to overcome a stronger opponent at close range using simple yet powerful techniques.

We're proud to have many highly skilled and experienced women teaching at our Wing Chun schools, and we frequently support initiatives such as Women's Health Week and International Women's Day.

Self Defence Classes for Children

Children from our Kids' Kung Fu classes demonstrate the Wing Chun stance and guard.

Children are vulnerable to many types of violence, both physical and psychological. Bullying, emotional abuse and sexual violence are all prone to happen when a parent or responsible adult is not present to intervene and protect the child. Through self-defence training, children can develop the confidence, mental toughness and physical skills to defend themselves when nobody else can.

We've designed our Kids' Kung Fu Classes to teach children practical self-defence skills in a safe and encouraging environment. Through themes such as 'stranger danger' and 'bully busting,' children learn effective ways to de-escalate and avoid danger, along with the physical skills to defend themselves if an attack cannot be avoided. By training with us, your child will learn to take control of their safety and become a more confident, independent and disciplined individual.

Children aged 4 to 9 train in our Little Dragons classes and teenagers aged 10 to 15 in Teen Phoenix. All other self-defence classes are open to adults and teens aged 13 and above.
