IT HAPPENED with Bruce Lee movies in the 1970s and The Karate Kid films a decade later. Now, an animated fighting panda has triggered a surge in youngsters taking up martial arts.
About 25 people had turned up for lessons at the prominent International Wing Chun Academy in the city after seeing the school holidays hit Kung Fu Panda 2, the school's national manager, Tristan Fung, said. ''Not only to our children's class, but to the adults' class as well.''
Interest leapt each time a big film about martial arts came out, he said. ''Many [students] say they were inspired to come and train because of the films.''
