Instructor Course

The International Wing Chun Academy's popular Instructor Course is your chance to take your Wing Chun to the next level while learning professional leadership and coaching skills.

The Instructor Course is open to all students of the Academy who have achieved Grade 3 standard or above.

Upon completion of the course requirements, you will become a Trainee Instructor, also known as a Sihing (male) or Sijie (female), denoted by a red sash worn around the waist.

Course Overview

The Instructor Course was originally developed by the Academy's founder, Grandmaster Jim Fung, and has been kept up to date with the latest industry knowledge by the Academy's experienced instructors.

Through an intensive 10-week course, you will learn about topics such as:

  • The history and development of Wing Chun and the Academy
  • The role of the martial arts instructor
  • Ethical behaviour of martial arts instructors
  • Leadership and communication skills
  • Injury prevention in martial arts
  • Conducting safe and effective exercise
  • Grandmaster Jim Fung's unique training programme and teaching methods

By the end of the course, you will have acquired excellent skills in Wing Chun theory and practical martial arts instruction.

Once you've qualified as a Trainee Instructor, you may be offered the opportunity to teach at a Headquarters or Suburban Branch of the International Wing Chun Academy.

Through teaching at the Academy, you will gain:

Course Duration

The Instructor Course is taught over a 10-week period, which includes 2 weeks of exams. Classes are held once a week and last for 80 minutes each.

The course is designed to be completed while you continue to attend your regular Wing Chun classes and progress through the Grading System of Grandmaster Jim Fung's Wing Chun Kung Fu®.

 

Assessments

During the course, you will be required to undergo a number of theoretical and practical assessments to ensure that you meet the high standards required of Instructors at the Academy.

The course entails the following assessments:

  • A 10-minute multiple choice Quiz in Week 5 - worth 10%
  • Theory Exam (90 minutes) conducted in Week 8 - worth 45%
  • Practical Exam (2 hours) conducted in Week 9 - worth 45%

These assessments will make up your total course mark.

 

Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate from the Instructor Course, you must:

  • Attend at least 80% of classes
  • Achieve a minimum total course mark of 60%
  • Complete an Apply First Aid course with, or possess a current First Aid certificate issued by, a registered provider (approx $100 to $120; not included in the Instructor Course fee)
  • Complete a 'Working with Children' check (available free of charge)

Graduation is held in Week 10 of the course. Upon graduation, you will be presented with a certificate and a copy of your assessment results.

 

Practical Experience Period

Following graduation, you will need to complete a 9-week 'Practical Experience Period' which involves teaching one Wing Chun class per week under the mentorship of a qualified Instructor.

Once you have completed your Practical Experience Period, you will be award a red sash and be deemed a fully qualified Trainee Instructor of the Academy.

Advancing to Instructor Rank

In order to advance to Instructor rank (blue sash), you must:

  • Complete the Instructor Course
  • Be rostered to teach at the Academy
  • Regularly attend Advanced Classes at the Academy - you must have attended at least 10 Advanced Classes as a Level 1 to be eligible for promotion to Instructor rank
  • Achieve Level 1 standard in Grandmaster Jim Fung's Wing Chun Kung Fu®
  • Pass an unannounced skill-review conducted by an Academy Instructor while you teach a class (free of charge)

Once you become an Instructor of the Academy, you will gain:

  • Up to a 100% subsidy of your training fees in exchange for teaching classes*
  • Invaluable teaching experience under Australia's martial arts industry leader
  • The potential to gain a broader and deeper understanding of the Wing Chun system through teaching
  • The opportunity to train under the expert guidance of the Academy's Senior Instructors through the Academy's Advanced Classes
  • The opportunity to apply to open an Affiliated School through the Academy's Affiliated Schools Programme
