Academy Rules

Codes of Respect and Conduct are important when participating in a traditional martial art. These rules have been implemented to make training at the Academy safe and beneficial for everyone.

Code of Respect

  • Address the Master as Sifu Jim or Grandmaster Jim Fung, and all trainers as Senior Instructor, Instructor, Sihing or Sijie.
  • Bow to the Masters upon entering and leaving the Academy, as well as at the beginning and end of each class.
  • Stand quietly in stance with your fists pulled back while being taught.
  • Show respect to all Academy members at all times.
  • Conduct yourself with honour and integrity and refrain from promoting aggression or violence.

Code of Conduct

  • You must participate in the entire training programme for the day, including the warm-up and warm-down.
  • If you are late for a class, you must go through a warm-up on your own before participating in the class. If you are more than 15 minutes late, you will not be permitted to join the class.
  • If you aren’t training in a class, refrain from distracting students who are participating in the class.
  • Do not recklessly or intentionally cause damage to Academy property or equipment.
  • You must cooperate with the reasonable directions of Academy staff members and teaching personnel acting in the performance of their duties.

Uniform and Student Card Requirements

  • Full uniform, including a named t-shirt, black kung fu pants and Grading Badge (G2+), is compulsory from Grade 1 B Group. Students not wearing full uniform will be required to train in Grade 1 A Group.
  • You must wear socks, cotton-soled kung fu slippers or approved martial arts shoes. Bare feet and shoes with hard or high-traction soles are not allowed.
  • All student cards must bear a recognisable photograph of the student and be submitted before class.

Safety and Hygiene

  • You must take care to minimise the risk of injury to yourself or others at all times.
  • All jewellery must be removed before class and fingernails and toenails must be kept short.
  • All cuts, scratches and open wounds must be cleaned and properly bandaged.
  • If you are ill, you must refrain from training until you have fully recovered.
  • You must observe a high standard of personal hygiene, shower or bathe regularly, wear clean uniform and use deodorant if necessary. Please refrain from using strong smelling deodorant or perfume.
